In this system, one talker (the instrument sending the data) can have multiple listeners (instruments receiving the data), but each must have its own wire (or wireless) connection to the talker. It transmits data between instruments in plain language text sentences, via a one-to-one serial connection between them. The NMEA 0183 standard has been in use for over 30 years.
